Hey everyone , just finished working on a magazine tracer unit. The idea started more out of need to make something probably just boredom setting in, any way he we go.

Things that will need

  1. Soldering iron
  2. Led light-from radio shack or off the internet cost me about 99 cents
  3. Solder
  4. Old spare mag- will mod the inside
  5. Electrical tape
  6. Donor flashlight- went to harbor freight and bought two 9 bulb led flashlight fot 4.99
  7. White gloss paint
  8. Screwdriver
  9. 22 gauge wire
  10. Small on/off switch

Step 1

Take the magazine and remove all the ammo out of this-I forgot to do this the first time, after the mag is empty remove the inner feed mechanism-the G3 mags slide out the bottom, the m4/16 mags slide out the top.  With the inner box removed you can now start laying out the where you want the wiring to be routed.  I drilled a hole in the outer housing of the mag.

Step 2

At this point you will want remove the battery holder from the donor flashlight.  Once removed use the soldering iron and solder one wire to the positive side and take the other and solder that one to the negative terminal on the battery holder.   After the soldering is complete, let the unit cool and take your led bulb and using the two wires that you just soldered touch the two legs on the bulb and find out which contacts go to the positive and negative on the bulb.  Once you find the results solder the negative to the corresponding leg, then take a small length of wire and solder that to the positive side then solder the other end to the positive terminal on your switch.

Step 3

At this stage you will want to layout where you want the wiring routed, i ran the wires out the bottom on the g3 mag.  On an m16 mag I drilled a hole about an inch from the bottom and ran the wires out.  Once you have everything laid out you will want to drill one or two holes in the feed tube. I drilled two to give the bb's a larger dose of light before leaving the magazine.

Step 4

To get better results I painted the inside of the mag and the feed assembly white to make the light brighter.  Once the paint has dried use some tape or super glue to secure the bulb in place over the holes in the feed assembly.  Secure the wiring with tape and reassemble the magazine with the wiring being either fed out of the bottom or thru the hole in the side of the mag.

Step 5

Once the magazine has been reassembled you want to seal of the hole where the wiring has passed thru.I used some shoe goo to attach the on off switch to the side of the mag. Then loaded the batteries into the holder which I taped the unit to the outside That pretty much sums up how I made a tracer unit for about $10.00 dollars.
